The rise of collaborative consumption

I love the way that people across the globe are stepping into their greatness – using their own power to change the world order.  Every week, there’s more evidence of this rise in people power – sometimes via big events (as happened in Egypt last week), sometimes via a collection of smaller events.

Authentic collaboration is happening, organically and spontaneously.  And the authenticity behind it is the key.  This collaboration is about more than just playing nicely in the sandpit.  It’s a new way of being… or, more precisely, an old way of being that we’re rediscovering.

It’s about trusting people.  It’s about building community.  It’s about saving our souls and replenishing them.

One initiative that has recently caught my attention is Collaborative Consumption, a hub for this movement:

“Collaborative Consumption describes the rapid explosion in swapping, sharing, bartering, trading and renting being reinvented through the latest technologies and peer-to-peer marketplaces in ways and on a scale never possible before. If you’ve used a car sharing service like Zipcar, experienced peer-to-peer travel on Airbnb, given away or found something on Freecycle or lent money through Zopa, you’re already part of the rise of Collaborative Consumption.

Collaborative Consumption is a game-changing opportunity for networked technologies to transform business, public services and the way we live.”

It just makes so much sense.

Here’s the TEDx talk by Rachel Botsman of Collaborative Consumption that expanded my horizons on this subject:

  1. Wow you were right! I did like this video clip. It is crazy how easy it is to barter and trade, and also amazing how it has evolved over the years, and how it has brought us together more so than before. Great post!
